Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some frequently asked questions about cryptic or stealth pregnancies:

Am I going crazy?

If you ask yourself this question, usually means you aren’t. As crazy people do not ask themselves this question. Even though a cryptic or stealth pregnancy can make you feel this way frequently. Most women who experience cryptic or stealth pregnancies are highly intuitive.  So they already hear thoughts, feelings and emotions of others and think they are their own. Including, other people thoughts of ''this person is crazy''. In the first trimester, this is especially intense because you are pregnant and you are being bombarded by all the lies about pregnancy and how you aren’t fitting into the boxes people like to create.

The Dr., OBGYN, or Midwife says I am not pregnant

Cryptic or stealth pregnancies in the Medical field are not clearly understood. For a woman to be going through a cryptic pregnancy, she can't be aware of it. A woman, in their definition, has to turn up at a hospital complaining of labour like symptoms, and then the doctor pronounces they are pregnant. This is an outdated and unknown theory to doctors and the medical field. Many have attempted to understand it; usually men and people who have not been through a cryptic or stealth pregnancy.

Please do not feel like you have to prove your pregnancy to the medical field. This can be a unkind path to progress down. They can ask for mental evaluations and depending on which country you are in the implications are different.

This is one of the main reasons for this website. To provide more clarity and documented information in this field. Use your doctors and OBGYNs to run blood tests and scans and ensure you are healthy.

Negative urine, blood and ultrasound tests for pregnancy. Am I still pregnant?

You may be pregnant with negative urine, blood and ultrasounds tests. The doctor will test your blood HcG levels and look  for a reading above 5 to confirm a pregnancy (depending on how many weeks you are pregnant). Some women have readings of 3 or less and are still pregnant. There are positions you can ask the ultrasound technician to put you in, to increase the chances of a positive ultrasound.

What positions increase the chances of a positive pregnancy ultrasound test?

Have the technician lay you on each side of your body and scan your pelvic and mid-section. With a retroverted or tilted uterus, the transvaginal and transabdominal scan do not allow the baby to be seen. Depending on how many weeks pregnant you are, this can be tricky for the technician to see. They are not trained to look for cryptic pregnancy babies, so the further along, the better chance you will have. Please do not be disheartened with the negative pregnancy ultrasounds.

What is a retroverted or tilted uterus?

My menstrual cycle has changed or I do not have one.

With a cryptic or stealth pregnancy a change in their menstrual cycle is common. It can be that your cycle has changed from being 5-7 days to 1-3 days, from dark red colour to bright red occassionally purple, from flowing to spotting. The main point being your menstrual cycle has changed from being regular to a something different, which can be mistaken for a menstrual cycle. There are also women who do not mentrate at all.

The Dr., OBGYN, Midwife or Technician found the baby. However, they said I am measuring less weeks than I know I am.

If you have a retroverted or tilted uterus it is difficult to measure your baby. It gives an optical illusion and size is not easily measured, even in a visible pregnancy. The other hypothesis is that cryptic or stealth pregnancy babies are a little smaller than usual. This is not a fact.

I have been pregnant for over 40 weeks and the baby still isnt born. What now?

Many cryptic or stealth pregnant women have reported being pregnant for over 40 weeks and most non cryptic and cryptic/stealth pregnancies go over 40 weeks without medical intervention. There are no concrete dates as to how long a cryptic or stealth pregnancy can go for either. This can be frustrating as the woman may experience her mucus plug falling out, contractions, and sore back aches, similar to labour. Then the labour pains disappear and no baby. You are still pregnant, it may not happen how you expected.

I am very aware and I sense I have been carrying my baby for 5 years.

Many of the women experiencing cryptic or stealth pregnancies are highly aware, intuitive or psychic. These babies are carried in the energetic field before they have a physical body and are then carried in the mother’s uterus. Some women have had their baby in their energetic field for 5 yrs or more or less. So for cryptic or stealth pregnancies, these women usually have been carrying the baby in their energetic field and then carrying their baby physically.

I sense movement and the pregnancy tests say ''I am not pregnant''.

Flutter type movement starts about 13 weeks and some women report feeling these earlier. For the first time mums, the flutters may not be recognizable. They are quick and sometimes feel like your necklace tapped against you, or your shirt rubbing against your tummy, or you may put it down to something else like gas. Then there is more movement at about 20 weeks, unmistakeable movement. Most cryptic or stealth pregnancy babies do not move much. Though I have seen about 5% of cryptic or stealth babies that very active. The lack of movement may be attributed to the tilted or retroverted uterus or the placenta being anterior. Some women report feeling their baby touching their spin.

What is Pseudocyesis? And can I be going through one?

Pseudocyesis is a clinical or subclinical signs and symptoms associated with pregnancy when the person is not actually pregnant. False pregnancy in humans is very uncommon and is occasionally psychological. The body can secret hormones that create the appearance of a pregnancy without there being one. This is common in relationships where a partner is being abusive and a pregnancy is created for self protection. This is why many psychologists, physiatrists or mental assessment people will ask if you are being abused by your partner. Only you can answer this question.

Prenatal care; should I take pregnancy vitamins?

I recommend treating yourself as if you are pregnant and having a normal visible pregnancy. Which means taking the recommended prenatal vitamins, no drinking of alcohol, reduce or no caffeine, be aware of the types of vigorous activities you do, and make sure you do not go climbing or walk on slippery floors that may cause you to fall over.

You may not be able to get access to the usual mid-wife or OBGYN, however, there are many other options. Some of which are hypnobirthing, hypnobabies, and freebirthing, reading recommended books, joining the Invisible Mothers – Cryptic and Stealth pregnancy support group or booking a session with Anne.
